Sending Money To The Philippines

By Rusty Ferguson on August 23, 2010

How To Send Money To The Philippines

I found the need to update what I’ve said in the past about my favorite way to send money to the Philippines.

I gave Xoom another try and I  now recommend  using Xoom to send money to the Philippines.

Send up to $2,999 to the Philippines for $4.99.

Since this is such a common question that I get and since it seems to need updating from time to time, I’ve now written and released a FREE E-Book called Philippine Experience:  How to Send Money To The Philippines.  I wrote it mostly for expats living in the Philippines that have a bank account in the USA and that wish to send money to themselves while living in the Philippines.

Remit Home Join
RemitHome

My last transaction, using Xoom took about 1o minutes to be processed and the money was ready for me to pick up.  Also, the cost is much less than that of using RemitHome.  You can send up to $2999 via Xoom for $4.99.  That would take three days and $30.00 to send via RemitHome.  That is a huge difference.

I’m a still a fan of RemitHome and I think you’ll be happy with their service.  If you have a problem, perhaps with your pickup location, they are all over it.   The bank where I was picking up my funds had me wait for a couple of hours a time or two.  I told RemitHome about it and officials from the main office Manila were calling me.  Several of them, making sure that I was being better taken care of.  They really lit a fire under that bank’s staff.  They also approve my transfers before they actually get their money.

I emailed Xoom before sending money this time  The first response was fast but a bit weak.  I complained about the canned answer and then I received much help.  My issues was broken up into two tickets and they acted very fast and followed up to make sure I was happy.

While for customer service, I think RemitHome is still the winner, it takes me day or two to get my money but with Xoom it took only 10 minutes or so.

Philippines Experince – Living In The Philippines

Expat Basic Training: Living in The Philippines

If living in the Philippines sounds like a possible choice for you, this is information you need.  It doesn’t matter where you get it, you do need the information.  Cebu Experience: Basic Expat Training is the first in what I hope will be a series of ebooks that I will release.  I just hope it doesn’t take me as long to write the next one.  It might, I may have put too much information in this one.  Buy it!

Can you find a good woman in the Philippines, you sure can. Can you find the worst nightmare of your life, yes you can. Can the Philippines be a tropical paradise? Yes, but its not heaven there are thorns in the roses.

In future books, I may include a lot of information from my websites but for this I didn’t.  There are a about two pages of the 30 plus page book that were taken from the website.  Most of it is all

basic training book cover

Cebu Experience Basic Training What You Should Know Before Coming To The Philippines

unpublished material.  It is designed to cover the essentials of what you need to know about living in the Philippines.  There is a lot of information intended to help you stay out of trouble.  Do you know that is not uncommon for a mother to be sitting next to a daughter at an internet cafe telling her what to say to an interested foreigner?  Its not uncommon, though I have not witnessed it, my Filipina girlfriend has.  Why is it important?  Their only purpose is to relieve you of money.

Some scam warnings one can find regarding the Philippines are scams themselves.  Often overstated and far less common than websites would have you think.  Once you are here and meet Filipina one on one, you’ll find most of them to be good honest people.

Can you find a good woman in the Philippines, you sure can.   Can you find the worst nightmare of your life, yes you can.  Can the Philippines be a tropical paradise?  Yes, but its not heaven there are thorns in the roses.  If you come to the Philippines and act like an American you could easily get yourself into trouble.  Raising your voice to a Filipino is reason enough to be blacklisted and deported! These are the kinds of things you need to know.  These are the kinds of things covered in this book but there are more than 30 pages of this kind of information.

I’ve been living in Cebu Philippines now for more  than two years.  I wish I had had this information, I would have moved to the Philippines sooner.  To find out more information about this book, including a list of chapters, please visit Cebu Experience, Basic Expat Training.

Merry Christmas its the Ber Months

By Rusty Ferguson on September 10, 2010

What is a Ber Month?  Well, its septemBER, OctobBER, NovemBER and DecemBER.  That’s how they are referred to here in the Philippines and it also means Christmas has officially started in the Philippines.   That’s right, Merry Christmas in September.  Yes, I’m amused.  No, I’m not making fun of the Philippines.  Its possible to be amused and respectful too.

The Philippines, The Land of Christmas

What’s so wrong with Christmas lasting more than a quarter of a year?  What’s wrong with people singing Christmas music in the streets for four months of the year.  Not a thing!

Last night I went for a short walk to Jose Rizal Park here in Bogo Town.   After a few moments, Jessie scoffed when she heard someone singing Christmas music.   I thought, then I said, wait, its the Ber months.  I had forgotten all about that.   That Christmas starts in September here.  I’m sure if I went to Jollibee’s (fast food store) I would hear Christmas music.

“Well that’s just insane, that’s not how we do in the USA.”  I don’t know how any expat could still use those words after living here for

christmas decoration

Christmas Decoration In the Philippines

a very short time.  Its not insane because its not the USA.  Come on people, its not rocket science, its not the USA its the Philippines.  Oh well, people might be tired of hearing me complain about the complainers.

Yeah Yeah Yeah, people will be asking where’s my Christmas.    One cannot be more removed from the spirit and meaning of Christmas than by asking that question.  Its not about what you get.  Its about being at peace with the good news that God has come to earth to live as a man.  You know what, I think Christ would have us give anyway.

But even during that time, how did many of us humans react?  We complained.  Jesus, from Nazareth no less, a King?  ”How ridiculous is that” the people in power scoffed.  God walked amongst us and we didn’t understand.  I can see a bunch of old leaders standing around, drinking and saying “not the way they did it in Jerusalem.”

So lighten up, enjoy the Christmas season.  Well try.  By the end of January you might very well be sick of it, but try.  ”January you say?”  That’s right, Christmas is not over on December 25.  Instead it carries over into part of January.  Oh come on, be happy about it.  Don’t worry about those that abuse it and enjoy the real meaning of Christmas.  I’m not going to tell you what that is. I know you already know.  Its Christmas in the Philippines, so just enjoy it!  Don’t be the Scrooge of the Philippines!  After all, look at me.  I am Santa Claus and that’s not an aswang, its Rudolph.  He’ll guide my sleigh through the next typhoon.

Its all how you see it!  What a wonderful place where its Christmas nearly half the year!

Dengue cases Soar in Visayas

By Rusty Ferguson on September 5, 2010

The plague of dengue is moving like a swarm of locust across areas of the Philippines.  Tacloban, in Eastern Leyte was hit hard.  Staggeringly hard.   The last report I saw indicated that the number of cases there was finally on the decline.  Though extremely high rates of infection, the number was finally moving down.  When I say extreme, that is no exaggeration.   The rate of increase for the first six months of the year was greater than 1000%.  That, is extreme!

So many Filipino with dengue have descended up on the public hospital in Cebu City that they have changed procedures. Those that need dengue test are in the fast lane.

Dengue in Cebu Province

Now, it seems to be Cebu’s turn. Though, we are talking an increase of less than 20%.  That’s a lot!  It seems like nothing though when I compare it to the 1000% in Tacloban.

Talisay City just outside of Cebu City seems to be fairly hit hard and is ready to spend nearly 10 million peso on the fight.  Cebu City itself is asking that patients go to hospital other than the city run hospital of Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC).  Where it is said that the hospital is already clogged with those being treated and tested for dengue.

Dengue Fast Lane

So many Filipino with dengue have descended up on the public hospital in Cebu City that they have changed procedures.  Those that need dengue test are in the fast lane.  Removing some of the extra steps in hopes of getting those people in and out of the system faster.  In the last 21 days there been 180 cases of dengue reported in Cebu City alone.  They are even calling it the Dengue Fast Lane, I’m sorry but I find that numerous.  Not the need to set it up, just the name.  Hop on board, the Dengue Express Train…..

A town near me has been hit hard.  I wish I could find per  capita numbers but all I can find are raw numbers.  That is, how many people and not what percent of the population.

Here are some numbers, Medellin is close to me.  Close to Bogo City but much smaller and they have nearly as many cases.  That’s alarming.  I hope we are not next.  I’m having enough problem right now.  I do not need dengue.

The top 10 local government units (LGUs) with dengue cases are:

Toledo City, 99
Talisay City, 89
Danao City, 88
Balamban, 86
Minglanilla, 61
Asturias, 53
Bogo City and Daanbantayan, 41
Liloan, 40
Argao, 38
Medellin, 37.

I’m also seeing fewer deaths reported across the Philippines.  I see report after report where there are fewer number of people dead as even though the number of cases are up.   The Philippines has known for sometime on how to treat this potential killer.  I don’t know if treatment has been more aggressive, better resources, or a less deadly form of the disease is the reason for the lower mortality rate.

Superstition, Herbs and Dengue

There is no vaccine for dengue.  Filipino have several herbal ”cures” for dengue.  Sometimes these working, is pretty weak.  Like my auntie was sick for two week and then my family brought here these special leaves and the next day she was well enough to go home.

bug spray

Spraying for Mosquito

Perhaps, just perhaps the transfusion she got the day before also helped or maybe the illness finally ran its course.    I can’t say these things don’t work but nearly every time I tell a Filipino that I have an ailment they suggest bitter melon.

That bitter melon should be dried and shipped around the world, it cures everything!  I’m not going to say it doesn’t but I’m sceptical.

Just last night, Jessie took her youngest son to a quack doctor.  There are different kinds of those, some are black magic.  Some are dealers of herbs.    I’m not sure which one Jessie took Jermain too.  Probably one that deals in herb, I hope.  :)  If not,  I don’t want to know.   I know I’ve slipped off on a tangent but these tangents are often the most informative part of an article.  So, I allow myself to do so.

Filipino are more superstitious than most from the West but you know what?  I’ve become superstitious since I’ve moved to the Philippines.  I’ve seen some things and some things that totally creep me out have been shared with me.  Even sending chills up my back as I write this.  I’m thinking of the slamming doors at my friends house and the “lady” dancing in the street at 4am one morning, in her long flowing white dress.  Or the bat with the humming bird head I saw and something I see moving in the walkway across from my home, late at night or early in the morning.  You know, at some point,  I’m going to have to acknowledge something is going on here!

With things like this though, its no wonder that Filipino turn to herbs and quack doctors to treat their ailments including the treatment of dengue.

It seems the Cebu Provincial Government is working on the problem by providing for increased spraying for mosquitoes.   Finally, that seems like something that might really help.   Often I see government officials scolding their constituents about keeping the area clean.

Things are often old or look old in the Philippines  Seeing a lot of clutter though, don’t see much of that.   I really don’t think clutter has a lot to do with dengue.   I also see global warming being blamed.  While I’m a believer in global warming, I think the effects are being used by people that need excuses or need to make some money.  So much of it is hype.  I’m not so sure its all hype with dengue.  I think there is some correlation and we may be seeing it in the Philippines already.

The major symptoms of dengue are something I live with every day.  However people often turned bright red.  This not always the case.  Here are some symptoms of dengue fever headache, fever, exhaustion, severe muscle and joint pain, swollen glands (lymphadenopathy), and rash.  Other signs of dengue fever include bleeding gums, severe pain behind the eyes, and red palms and soles.

I’ve talked with two expats that contracted dengue.  One barely knew he had it.  The other was very sick for months and talks of long lasting effects it has had on him.    If you have it, seek treatment.  Dengue can be a killer.

Monkey Mania

By Rusty Ferguson on September 3, 2010

My Philippine Monkey bit another kid this week.  A few days ago , the yaya told us that Juliet bit a child.   Seems he dropped something and it rolled under her cage.  She grabbed his hand and wouldn’t let go, then sunk her teeth into it.

Juliet Strikes Again

Today, I learn the boy’s mother has been by twice to collect money because of the bite.   She wanted P100 this morning and I told Jessie to give it to her but tell her to keep the boy away as there would be no more.  It made Jessie really mad, she told the boys

George Was Nearly Tame. Juliet is Not.

mother that if he came back she would report it to the Barangay Capitan.  She also said the boy was teasing Juliet.

The boy’s mother first said she needed money for something to do with school but Jessie told her that didn’t cost anything.   I didn’t know about that one.  It was the same day that it happened.  She came back today though wanting money for medicine.  She wanted only P100.  Jessie said the wound had not been cleaned “they just let it rot!”

I don’t know, I think they should pay me, their boy might have poisoned my monkey when she bit him.

Yesterday, I ran some kids off.  They had their hands on the cage.  Juliet seemed to be enjoying them as they were feeding her.  I suspect that this boy has teased her before and she got her just revenge.   I wish I could keep the kids out of here.   I enjoy them but I don’t want trouble.

Jessie warns me often, “they see you as an ATM.”  I guess that’s the darker side of the Philippines.   She would know better than I.  She is the one that grew up here, she knows the culture.  She knows what Filipino say and do.  She has far more insight into Filipino than I ever can so while I don’t follow blindly, I do listen carefully to what she tells me about the culture of the Filipino.

Most don’t treat me like they see me as an ATM.  However, I have seen it a couple of times.   I had a friend that I grew weary of as every time I saw her she needed money.  Or she needed load (credits of her pre-paid cell phone) to text with me.  Oddly though, every time I saw her in the street she was texting someone.  Why did she always have load when I saw her out but never when I sent her a text.  I sent her a lot before I caught on.    Her friend was sending me a lot of text messages about my upcoming trip to a resort.  When I told her I was already at the resort, the messages stopped.   Not another message from that girl since.  :)  So, these things do happen.  That does  not mean you should think every Filipino is out to fleece or even beg from you.  Most would NEVER do so.   If you’re hungry though, what would you do?  You might not know how bad a person’s situation is, so don’t be quick to judge harshly.

I tell her to get a sign made, a sign that says monkey bites.  She gives me a strange smile when I say that.  Well, its full disclosure, in my culture, you warn someone and they stick their hand in there anyway, shame on them.  Its there blood spilt, their problem.  That’s some of the vanishing American common sense.   Common sense is more frequent in the Philippines than in the USA.  Seems like some might need to be applied here.

If you stick your hand in a monkey’s cage, the monkey just might bite it!  Having the monkey makes it seem more like I’m living in the Philippines.

Bogo City is Not A City

By Rusty Ferguson on September 1, 2010

The supreme court has again ruled 7-6 that the law upgrading Bogo Town and 15 other Philippine municipalities to city status has been revoked.

Bogo is a Town Again

The court ruled the previous ruling was a tie vote of 6-6 could not overturn a majority ruling made the month before.

As I understand it, there was a law that raised the city hood income requirement as set in the constitution.  It would seem to this layman that the congress could pass another law to provide for an exemption to the prior law but the court seems to be saying no to that.  Republic Act 2009, passed by congress raised the requirement so its surprising to this bystander that the congress cannot pass another law making the exception.

I will be surprised though, if the now ex-cities don’t file another motion to reconsider the reconsideration.  The court seemed to

bogo city map

Where in The Philippines is Bogo City

be answering that already but the main reason the motion for reconsideration was granted was the previous tie vote.  I’m sure that leaves the door open for the hopeful towns.

If they loose their city-hood permanently, they loose a large amount of funding.   The other cities in the Philippines have a monatary interest because with 16 new cities taking a slice of the city pie, they have smaller pieces of pie.

While I do not wish to influence the outcome, even if I could, as one who lives in Bogo Town, I hope the court reverses itself again.  I have no idea though, how likely that is.  I’m an infant when it comes to Philippine politics and as a foreigner, it is both wrong and illegal for me to attempt to have any influence at all.

Budget Resort in Cebu

By Rusty Ferguson on August 31, 2010

We had another all day brown out in Bogo City yesterday.   I was able to sleep through much of it but finally about 1pm I could sleep no more.  My battery powered fan is dying a slow death.  Perhaps  we over charged it.  So I’m looking to buy a new one but with a power strip that also has a time so it will switch itself off.

We also went to a public beach nearby.  Again very rocky.  I am told there is a passage way to the beach and someone pointed over there.  I looked and it looked like you’d have to be part monkey or very drunk to attempt that!

Brownout Resort Hunting In Bogo City

So, I took a cold shower, which was okay considering all the heat.  Jessie and I were off to Jolibee.  Jollibee is my brownout retreat as they have aircon when there is no power in the rest of Bogo City.   The “mall” has one but its warm in there even when the power is at full strength.  Jollibee’s is not much better but at least I’m sitting and not moving around much.  Its also on the lower floor,  which helps to keep it cooler.   I take my fan with me when I go even when the power is on.  I’m very hot natured.

beach in cebu

Oldot Public Beach in Cebu

I can live with the heat but these brownouts really hack me off.  I guess, I will have to live with those too but I’m going to grumble about it.  We had another one just now, while I was moving files to Jessie’s PC over the network.    Another reason to growl.

While at Jollibee’s, I ran into my friend Joe Bogo.  He suggested we go out to The Hide Away Beach Resort in Odlot.  Odlot is a barangay of Bogo City.  Its about a 20 minute ride by tricycle.

I just noticed a review about it having white sand beaches, not where I was.   Perhaps in other locations.   Where I was the coast line was rocky but it was beautiful none-the-less.  Its off the beaten path and further out from town so there are not a lot of tourist there.  They do have four rooms.  I didn’t think to inquire about their pricing.  Might be nice to stay out there.   I don’t know about the quality so I wont speculate.  The staff was very friendly though and pleasing to look at too!

I’ve got Pictures of Odlot Beaches In Cebu

I took my camera and took some pictures that I will share.  The water is very clear and I would go swimming there.  I didn’t pay the entrance fee though, we were there to just look around a bit.  If I had my own transportation,  I would likely go often.  I’m starting to think about buying a multi-cab (like a small Ford Ranger pickup truck) but for now,  I’m only thinking about it.

We also went to a public beach nearby.  Again very rocky.  I am told there is a passage way to the beach and someone pointed over there.  I looked and it looked like you’d have to be part monkey or very drunk to attempt that.  Or at least younger and more nimble than me.  I am many things, nimble is not one of them!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the pictures of my little Cebu Experience.    I had a great time taking them.  However, my legs were sore the next day.

A Monkey, Tanduay and Philippine Fun

By Rusty Ferguson on August 27, 2010

A short video of George at the Bay of Bogo.  Not far from my home in Bogo City there is a wharf.   The wharf is known to the local as Pantalan.

A Philippine Monkey

On this trip, I took George (Philippine Monkey), Jessie (my Filipina girlfriend), a camera and a video camera with me.  We soon attracted a group of kids.  The happy “music” you hear is the way too familiar sound of the foot powered tricycle selling ice cream.  Too familiar because I’ve heard it a few million times too many.  These guys work very hard for their money though, so buy their ice cream. :)

I miss getting out and walking around town.  I have not been able to go out as much because of my infernal and eternal itching.  When I walk out the door, I itch.

I had a little too much fun last night.  It involved a couple of bottles of Red Horse, finished off with a bottle of Tanduay Rhum.  Yes, that’s the way its spelled here.  Pretty good stuff.  It comes in two strengths.  The Tanduay 65 is a dark rum and it is the most popular.  There is also Tanduay TSQ that I have not had the pleasure of.  I don’t know that I’ve ever seen it.  Tanduay 65 is 65 proof as the

philippines ice cream vendor

Ice Cream Vendor on he Beach

name implies.  The TSQ is stronger but I don’t know the proof.   Tanduay also makes Cossack Vodka and I don’t think I’ve had that but perhaps a Filipino shared some with me.  Often when I’m walking, a pinoy (male Filipino) will offer to share their drink with me.  Sometimes I accept!  Red Horse is a popular beer in the Philippines, I think second most popular but often the first to run out.  It packs a harder punch than the more common San Miguel which is a pale pilsen.

Filipina and a Drinking Session

I didn’t drink a lot last night but Jessie and her friend got wasted.  I wont mention the name of the Filipina as it may cause too much tsismis (pronouned chismis) or gossip.  My friend, Joe Bogo, also joined us late in our drinking session.   He missed most of the fun and he doesn’t drink any more.   Too much fun for him in his early years so he can no longer enjoy the spirits.   He seems to have a great time without it.  I don’t drink much as it will make me feel too bad the next day.   Sending my blood sugar sky high (I am diabetic).   I wish I could be 30 something again.   My 30′s saw the end of my heavy drinking days too as the after effects became too unpleasant.  :)

Yes, I know I started out talking about a monkey and kids and a nice healthy walk and ended up talking about drinking and girls.  Not such a bad life.  We had a lot of laughs and a lot of fun.  Common though, for those of use experiencing Cebu while living in the Philippines.

The Filipina is Wrong

By Rusty Ferguson on August 26, 2010

Another video of the Philippines, I took while walking around Bogo City in Northern Cebu, Philippines.   This time though, I’m harassing my girlfriend, Jessie.  Actually our neighbour with the rooster turned out to be just fine,  I like him better than most! But, her trying to not answer me then letting it slip is a riot to me.

“That Was Just Talk”

“What was it if it wasn’t true.”  Did you notice, I never got an answer?

And of course, the roosters can be heard loud and clear in this video.  I think that should be the trademark sound of the Philippines and the national bird too!

Now before I got here, she told me I could video tape her at any time I wanted too.  Of course, once I got here she was much less brave and complained any time the camera was on her.  As you can see though, I persist.  I sure wish I had a digital video camera.  As soon as I get rich from all the money I make on the web (when I do) I will get a digital video cam.

She is pretty good at pestering me too but don’t tell her I said that.  Me though, I’m the master pester.  Harassing me, its generally means you’re going to catch all heck later.

“I Admit I Am Wrong”

If the camera had not been on, she would have never admitted she was wrong.  I don’t think I’ve ever heard her say it before or after.  I’ve never heard any Filipina say it.

I have a lot of videos of the Philippines.  They are all casual.  I will share them as I can.  I will have more video tape soon.  I was told I could get it on Colon Street in Cebu City but I have never been able to find any.  So this time, I went ahead and ordered it from Amazon when I made my last purchase.

I think He’s a Little Confused

Now did the Southern Boy come shining through when I said that?  That is definitely a Southern Thing.  Its okay, so am I and its too bad the rest of you are not.   Jessie once told me it sounds like I’m singing when I talk  That’s really a nice thing, I think.

Philippine Monkey Video

By Rusty Ferguson on August 25, 2010

Remembering George

It has been just a few days more than two years ago when someone killed our Philippine
monkey, George. I put together a video of he and Jessie cuddling and lounging around. He was a ham and great manipulator. Oh, don’t underestimate him, I think he knew exactly what he was doing.

We have another monkey now. Juliet is a joy but she’s also a terror. She is not a pet really. She’s amusing but she is wild. I would be fearful to allow anyone to handle her these days.

When we lost George, it was hard. I knew the loss was great but I underestimated how much I’d miss him two years later.

Here’s a few minutes of his life with us.

I still go over in my mind, trying to figure out if someone killed him or it was some kind of freak accident. I would have bet money on a cat except a cat couldn’t tie George to that fence the way he

was killed.

Monkeys are Wild

Yes, we have another monkey now. Juliet is a joy but she’s also a terror. She is not a pet really. She’s amusing but she is wild. I would be fearful to allow anyone to handle her these days. Taking her for a walk is out of the question. She needs to be with other monkeys but she’s better off with me than she was when we got her. Her life is much improved, her health is much improved and I’m

Philippine Monkey Drinking Milk and Honey (Juliet when still thin)

sure some of that wild attitude of hers comes from that improved health.

She belongs in the wild but I don’t think she could go back there.  I think that would mean a long slow wasting death for her unless someone killed her or a python got her.   She didn’t get to learn all her monkey lessons before she was captured.  She’s

afraid of lizards and she’s suppose to eat those!  She’s fussy with bugs and again, she should be making a meal of all of those.

I wouldn’t take one from the wild.  Juliet was captured by a farmer and was starving.  Compared to her prior life, Juliet is a very happy monkey.
