Evil Food of The Philippines
Evil does come in a pleasing form and this chocolate covered bread is hard to resist. Its not just covered though, its also filled with chocolate. Take a paper towel with you, you’re going to need it! It taste great, beyond any other bread I think I’ve ever had except for one. Nothing can compare with my grandmother’s home made cinnamon rolls! If anything could it would be this chocolate covered bread.

The bread itself is very dense and very rich. Without the chocolate it would be awesome. With the chocolate its paradise in your mouth. Better than pizza, better than cheese its just awesome.
There is a problem though, besides the obvious issues with weight gain, I’m a diabetic. My diabetes is not real bad but I shouldn’t eat even one. Most of the time i don’t and if I give in I usually eat one or two. The other day, I ate four or five and boy it was good going down. Then it hit and it didn’t feel so great for the next 24 hours. I was foolish to eat that many.
When you’re in this part of Cebu though, you have to get this. I’ve been trying to find out if this is just a Cebu or Visayas food or if it can be found most places. A friend that lives in Mindanao says he’s never heard of it. I asked some other folks on a forum and they didn’t respond. My girlfriend tells me they have it in her home town which is located in the Province of Leyte.
Its been two days since I had some and the sweet chocolate still lingers and calls my name but no way, I thought I might die! Looking at the pictures also brings back the wonderful smell of fresh bread. Why do things that taste so good have to be so bad for you. It is one of the highlights of Philippine cuisine.

at airports, my husband and i always get coffee and a cinnabuns to share, yum! here in florida, when the rays win, dunkin donuts will give away free donuts. and they have this one filled with chocolate. so when the rays win, off we go to dunkin donuts to get free donut and drink coffee.
I splurge on coffer at Starbucks from time to time. Cinnabuns are a fond memory only.
Man they are good.
No Kripsy Kream in Florida? Much better than Dunkin.
Another memory of mine. I’m usually quite good at resisting as I know its just going to make me feel bad in the long run and another step close to insulin.

krispy kream is not convinient at every corner here. i remember my last visit in ’89, there was a dunkin donut in cebu and when i wanted to escape the smell of the philippines, i would drop into a dunkin donut. dunkin donut smelled like america to me.
Krispy Kream is harder to find and they are not in all US States, mostly in the south. They are not in Texas or at least not in all of Texas or were not, I have no idea if that has changed.
The non carb diet craze nearly put them out of business too.
Yeah there are lots of Dunkin donut shops in the Pi and I think what you get here is better than the USA, its often much fresher!

Try Julie’s Bake Shop. They have it here Bogo but I think all the bake shops in Bogo have it..
Oh dean, I wasn’t going to ask Rusty that because they looked too good! Better I don’t know these things..too late. Rusty you just have so many great things to buy there. Have you ever seen in Gaisano Bakery inside the market they have a loaf of bread with raisins shaped like a small roast pig. Another time they had one shaped like a rat–too cute!
“inside the market” not sure what you mean by that. I’ve been in there of course but not all that often. I saw some and bought some great bread from the one in Talisay when I lived there but no rat or pig shaped bread.
I initially didn’t say where to get this because I said you can get it in Bogo and you can get it at all of the bread stores at one time or another. They don’t always have it and after I nearly committed suicide by bread, I don’t think I’ll ever have another.
Boy, I really over did it because I still don’t want any more.
I’ve been to a lot of Julie’s but never once saw chocolate bread. Good thing…
For the bakery, of course go in straight through the small mall inside at Jollibees, and as soon as you get inside the Gaisano supermarket, turn left–it’s right over there in the corner. I like a lot of their things… I noticed outside there was a small donut concession. Sort of like a Dunkin Donuts but not. Too many treats!
Oh yeah too, across from that, was some fancy chicken roasting machine–never saw one of those before. Almost like a chicken vending machine.
It was the words “the market” that threw me.
I thought it was a Dunkin Donuts. I wondered why they taste so much better, or so I’m told. haha
Do you realize how funny the idea of a chicken vending machine is?
I’ve seen lots of chicken roasting machines, there’s a row of them at Rizal Park but I don’t know what you’re referring to. Something different from that? If so, I’ve got to seek that out!
Really Rusty–It’s like a big fancy vending machine with a glass front and rows of chickens turning all at the same time. There was a guy off to the side to supervise the selling I guess. Must be some new franchise…

The Sunday market at Banilad Town Center (BTC) found in the main lobby every Sunday from 10 a.m. has a good selection of artisan breads. A good number of foreigners buy their breads like whole wheat, rye, bagels, baguettes, multi-cereals every sunday there.
I would love to visit Carlos, nice to see you back.
